Primary

At Caledonian primary school, we base our practice on creating a nurturing and supportive environment. Our dedicated team of two teachers and three teaching assistants provides a high level of individualised care. Our staff works closely with families, carers and other professionals to develop strong support networks, ensuring smooth transitions between home and school.

The school is equipped with two main teaching classrooms and four quieter breakout areas, ensuring a variety of spaces for learning and growth. In addition to expansive outdoor spaces, we provide a dedicated Lego and Relax Kids room, a music room, and other specialised learning areas, including a larger kitchen in one of our extended buildings where we are developing skills for life. We are proud to have achieved our Eco-Schools Green Flag status, and are currently working towards our Bronze Mental Health Champion award alongside our continued journey for Silver within Rights Respecting Schools. We focus heavily on fostering the social, emotional, and physical well-being of all young people who attend.

To ensure each child's academic journey is tailored to their needs, our staff complete a comprehensive initial assessment upon entry. This helps us identify their current academic level, allowing us to provide scaffolded learning and academically appropriate tasks. While the full curriculum is offered, we place a strong emphasis on the four pillars of the Curriculum for Excellence: Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Responsible Citizens, and Effective Contributors. Our pupils are supported to achieve while experiencing all aspects of the curriculum, fostering a well-rounded educational experience.

Our highly-trained staff have a wealth of knowledge in supporting a variety of additional needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition, Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), and Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Both of our teachers are currently trained in nurture and trauma-informed practices, and all staff are trained in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and Relax Kids strategies, equipping them to support students with a trauma-informed lens. Additionally, our teachers are trained in the therapeutic use of Lego, a creative and effective approach for supporting young people with significant trauma backgrounds.

We believe in preparing every child for their next step. When the time is right, pupils can seamlessly transition back to a mainstream learning environment or continue their journey to the secondary school on campus. Since all transitions are child-led and fully supported by our staff, young people will already be familiar with the learning environment and staff team, ensuring a confident and smooth move.

Caledonian Primary School is a nurturing cornerstone of our independent through school, catering to pupils aged 5 to 18 with social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties. As part of a cohesive campus shared with our secondary school, we provide a supportive and inclusive environment where young learners aged 5 to 11, including those placed outwith their parents’ care by local authorities across the UK, are empowered to thrive.

Our dedicated team, comprising two highly skilled teachers and three compassionate teaching assistants, delivers individualised care with a trauma-informed approach. We work collaboratively with families, carers, and external professionals to build robust support networks, ensuring seamless transitions between home and school. Our school is designed to foster growth, with two main teaching classrooms and four quieter breakout areas to accommodate diverse learning needs. Beyond the classroom, pupils benefit from a wealth of specialised spaces, including a dedicated Lego and Relax Kids room for emotional regulation, a music room for creative expression, and a large kitchen in one of our extended buildings where pupils develop essential skills for life. Our expansive outdoor areas, enriched by local amenities, provide opportunities for rural skills and physical activities, fostering teamwork and a connection with nature.

We are proud to have achieved Eco-Schools Green Flag status and are actively pursuing our Bronze Mental Health Champion award while working towards Silver in the Rights Respecting Schools programme. These accolades reflect our commitment to environmental stewardship, mental health, and fostering a culture of respect and inclusion. Aligned with Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence, we prioritise the four capacities—Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Responsible Citizens, and Effective Contributors. Upon entry, each pupil undergoes a comprehensive assessment to identify their academic level, enabling our staff to deliver tailored, scaffolded learning experiences that ensure progress while embracing the full curriculum.

At Caledonian Primary, we are committed to preparing every child for their next steps, whether transitioning back to mainstream education or progressing to our on-campus secondary school.

Child-led and fully supported transitions ensure familiarity with the environment and staff, making these milestones smooth and confident.
