Broad General Education

At Caledonian Campus, our secondary curriculum is rooted in Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence, providing pupils with a broad and inclusive educational experience through the Broad General Education (BGE).

The BGE phase covers S1–S3 and is designed to support academic, personal and social development while preparing pupils for the Senior Phase and their future pathways.

Curriculum

During the BGE phase, pupils engage with all eight Curriculum for Excellence curriculum areas:

  • Expressive Arts

  • Health and Wellbeing

  • Languages, including English and Modern Languages

  • Mathematics

  • Religious and Moral Education

  • Sciences

  • Social Studies

  • Technologies

These areas are delivered at levels appropriate to each pupil's individual abilities, prior learning and needs, ensuring that pupils are supported to progress while continuing to experience challenge.

In S3, pupils are introduced to National-level subjects, helping them become familiar with the structure and expectations of National qualifications and supporting a smooth transition into the Senior Phase.

Wider Achievement

Alongside their academic learning, BGE pupils have opportunities to take part in wider achievement programmes.

ASDAN

ASDAN programmes recognise personal achievement and development, helping pupils build skills including teamwork, communication, confidence and independence.

Skills for Life, Learning and Work

Through targeted support from school staff, pupils develop transferable skills such as problem-solving, resilience, communication and employability.

Career Planning and Guidance

In partnership with Skills Development Scotland, pupils begin exploring their future pathways during the BGE phase, particularly in S3.

This early engagement helps pupils understand the opportunities available to them in further education, apprenticeships, training and employment, empowering them to make informed decisions about their future.

Transition to Senior Phase

The BGE provides pupils with a strong foundation for the Senior Phase.

Through a combination of broad learning, personalised support and wider achievement opportunities, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to progress towards qualifications and experiences that reflect their individual aspirations.
