Pupil's Journey at Caledonian Campus
Background
Pupil 1, a 15-year-old pupil, was referred to Caledonian Campus following significant concerns about his wellbeing and academic progress.
He had experienced poor school attendance, drug-related activity and frequent absconding from both school and home. These behaviours were putting his safety at risk and significantly affecting his education.
When he first joined Caledonian Campus, these difficulties continued and he found it challenging to engage with staff and the structured school environment.
Initial Challenges
Our team worked with Pupil 1, his family and external professionals to develop a personalised support plan and risk assessment.
The plan focused on his safety and wellbeing while encouraging engagement with education. Staff used a consistent, trauma-informed approach and worked to establish positive relationships and clear boundaries.
Initially, the introduction of boundaries and expectations resulted in conflict, with Pupil 1 displaying verbally aggressive behaviour when staff challenged his actions.
Staff remained consistent and continued to build trust, using Therapeutic Crisis Intervention strategies and focusing on creating a safe and supportive environment.
Progress & Transformation
Over time, the consistent and compassionate approach of staff began to have a positive impact.
Pupil 1's trust in staff grew and his attendance improved significantly as he became more secure within the school environment.
He engaged with a range of opportunities across the campus, including the Lego therapy and Relax Kids spaces, outdoor rural skills activities and the Sports Centre.
As his behaviour stabilised, he became increasingly engaged with learning. Staff provided tailored and scaffolded learning opportunities based on his individual needs and strengths.
Academic Achievement
By the time he left Caledonian Campus, Pupil 1 had achieved eight National 4 qualifications across subjects including:
-
English
-
Mathematics
-
Practical Cookery
-
Automotive Skills
-
Construction Skills
-

-
Personal Development
His achievements reflected both his academic progress and the commitment he had developed towards his learning.
Planning for the Future
Throughout his time at Caledonian Campus, Pupil 1 worked with staff and Skills Development Scotland to explore his future options.
He developed an interest in joinery, reflecting the practical and construction-based skills he had developed through his learning.
Following his time at school, he enrolled in a joinery qualification and secured an apprenticeship.
The Outcome
Pupil 1's journey demonstrates the importance of personalised support, strong relationships and a consistent approach.
He left Caledonian Campus with qualifications, practical skills and greater confidence, ready to take his next steps into further education and employment.
