Life at Caledonian

Life at Caledonian Campus is about more than what happens in the classroom. We provide a supportive environment where pupils can develop their confidence, interests and independence through a wide range of activities, experiences and opportunities.

From sport, music and creative activities to practical learning, outdoor experiences and dedicated wellbeing spaces, we encourage every young person to discover their strengths, develop new skills and experience success.

Wellbeing & Support

The wellbeing of our pupils is at the heart of everything we do.

We recognise that many of the young people who join Caledonian Campus may have experienced challenges that have affected their education, relationships and emotional wellbeing. Our approach is therefore built around positive relationships, consistency, understanding and creating a safe environment where pupils can feel supported.

Our staff work closely with pupils, families, carers and other professionals to understand individual needs and provide appropriate support.

Nurture & Trauma-Informed Practice

Our staff are trained in nurture and trauma-informed approaches, helping us understand how a young person's experiences may influence their behaviour, relationships and engagement with learning.

We focus on building positive, trusting relationships and providing appropriate support to help pupils develop emotional regulation, resilience and confidence.

Staff are also trained in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, supporting pupils and staff to respond appropriately during times of heightened distress.

Relax Kids

All staff within the school have training in Relax Kids strategies.

Relax Kids provides structured activities designed to help children move from high levels of energy towards a calmer and more relaxed state. Activities can support mindfulness, focus, confidence and positive wellbeing.

Our dedicated Relax Kids space provides pupils with an environment where they can take time to relax and regulate when they need it.

Lego Therapy

Lego therapy provides opportunities for pupils to develop social communication and collaborative skills through creative play.

Young people can work individually, in pairs or in small groups to build models and complete activities. Through this approach, pupils can develop skills including:

  • Collaboration

  • Communication

  • Sharing and turn-taking

  • Problem-solving

  • Teamwork

  • Conflict resolution

  • Peer support

Most importantly, Lego provides a fun and engaging way for pupils to experience the satisfaction of completing something together.

Physical & Emotional Wellbeing

Physical activity and opportunities to relax are important parts of life at Caledonian Campus.

Our Sports Centre provides space for pupils to participate in a range of physical activities, while our dedicated wellbeing spaces provide opportunities to slow down, reset and develop strategies for managing emotions.

Enrichment & Activities

We believe pupils should have opportunities to experience new things, discover interests and develop skills outside of their everyday classroom learning.

Our enrichment opportunities include a mixture of creative, practical, physical and outdoor activities.

Activities may include:

  • Sports and physical activities

  • Music

  • DJ and sound production

  • Creative activities

  • Outdoor learning

  • Rural skills

  • Cooking

  • Wider achievement programmes

  • Trips and outings

  • Volunteering and community activities

These experiences help pupils build confidence, develop relationships and discover new interests while developing valuable skills for life, learning and work.

Sports & Physical Education

Our dedicated Caledonian Sports Centre provides a fantastic indoor space for physical education, recreation and wider learning.

The Sports Centre includes a 4-a-side football pitch, as well as facilities for a range of other activities.

Pupils can take part in:

  • Football

Physical activity provides opportunities for pupils to develop fitness, coordination, teamwork and resilience, while also supporting positive physical and emotional wellbeing.

The Sports Centre also provides opportunities for pupils to learn outside of traditional academic subjects. A practical cooking kitchen allows young people to develop home cooking and independent living skills, while the Pool Room and Table Tennis Room provide additional opportunities for recreation and social interaction.

Music, Creative & Digital

Creative opportunities are an important part of life at Caledonian Campus, allowing pupils to explore their interests and express themselves in different ways.

Music

Our Music Room provides a creative environment equipped with instruments including:

  • Guitars

  • Pianos

  • Drums

Pupils have opportunities to learn instruments, develop musical skills and take part in music activities.

Music has also provided opportunities for pupils to build confidence and explore their creativity in a supportive environment.

DJ & Sound Production

We run weekly DJ and sound production opportunities, allowing pupils to explore music technology and develop practical creative skills.

Creative Learning

Pupils can access a range of creative activities alongside their academic learning, including photography, digital media and other practical projects.

These opportunities encourage creativity, problem-solving and self-expression while helping pupils discover interests that may support future learning and career pathways.

Skills, Outdoor Learning & Practical Experiences

Practical learning gives pupils the opportunity to develop skills that can be applied to everyday life, future education and employment.

Our campus provides opportunities to develop practical skills through:

  • Cooking

  • Automotive and mechanics

  • Construction

  • Rural skills

  • Outdoor learning

  • Creative and digital activities

  •

Our outdoor areas provide opportunities for physical activity, rural skills and learning outside the classroom.

Practical experiences can help pupils develop independence, teamwork, resilience and problem-solving skills while providing opportunities to experience success in different ways.

Community & Experiences

Caledonian Campus is part of the wider community and provides pupils with opportunities to learn beyond the school environment.

We make use of local facilities and resources where appropriate and provide opportunities for pupils to develop relationships with the wider community.

Our practical and vocational learning also supports links with employers and other organisations, helping pupils gain an understanding of the world of work and the opportunities available to them beyond school.

These experiences form an important part of preparing young people for their future and developing the skills, confidence and independence they need for their next steps.
